Former lawmaker Uche Onyeagucha has expressed his support for the ongoing nationwide #EndBadGovernance protests.
In a statement, Onyeagucha, who represented Imo East Senatorial District in the 9th Assembly, refuted claims that the Igbo community opposes the protests.
He said, “This view is wrong and it is tainted with ignorance. Ndigbo support the ongoing National protests. Ndigbo more than any other ethnic group in Nigeria are opposed to bad government in Nigeria. Ndigbo are a politically dynamic ethnic group in Nigeria.”
Onyeagucha highlighted the political diversity of the South East region, saying, “Look at the records. Ndigbo have five states in the South East zone. Abia is Labour Party. Anambra is APGA, Ebonyi is APC, Enugu is PDP and Imo is APC. No other Zone is as politically dynamic as the South East.”
He emphasized the Igbo community’s history of resistance against bad governance, saying, “Ndigbo have shown a huge capacity for resistance in Nigeria at least in recent times… Ndigbo are never afraid of resistance… Ndigbo contributed massively in the struggles against Colonial rule. Records have it that the British resented Igbo opposition greatly.”
Onyeagucha also mentioned the Igbo community’s unique form of protest, saying, “Ndigbo have developed a more civilized form of protests against bad government and hunger in Nigeria. The model is called SIT AT HOME… I appeal to the rest of Nigeria to copy, emulate and join the South East in adopting Sit at home as a Nigerian National model of protest.”
He concluded by reiterating his support for the protests, saying, “I support the protests. The South East supports the National Protests. Ndigbo sat at home and protested with their absence from the roads, markets, businesses, offices, and worship centers.”
