A recent report by Conflict Research Network West Africa has called for the implementation of a National Peace Policy to tackle Nigeria’s persistent security challenges and conflicts.
The report, presented at Niger Delta University, highlights the need for a comprehensive approach to address insecurity, violent extremism, and conflict management.
According to the report, a national peace policy would provide a framework for integrating federal, state, and local institutions in peacebuilding efforts.
The researchers emphasized the importance of conflict-sensitive policies across all government levels, as well as support for strategic communications systems that promote peaceful coexistence among different communities, according to Nigerian Tribune.
They also stressed the need to curtail the spread and use of small arms and light weapons, which undermines peacebuilding efforts.
Furthermore, the report recommends that states without formal peacebuilding agencies establish and put in place necessary structures and mechanisms for peace institutions.
This would ensure that conflict drivers are detected, prevented, and resolved proactively.
By implementing these measures, Nigeria can develop effective mechanisms to address its security challenges and promote lasting peace, according to the report.
“The Federal Government should design and implement a national peace policy that integrates both federal, state, and local institutions. The peace policy should adopt a whole-of-government approach that ensures that all government policies are conflict-sensitive, do not contribute to the conflict, and contribute to peace.
‘’It should support state and local governments with the infrastructure for the development of effective strategic communications systems that promote peaceful coexistence between and among different communities. This will help counter disinformation and amplify moderate voices of peace and tolerance at the local level, targeting communities that are at -risk.
“Intensify efforts in supporting the state and local governments in curtailing the spread, access, and use of small arms and light weapons by unauthorized persons, which undermines the operations of the levers of peace. By so doing, the structures of peacebuilding will be preserved and protected,” it stated.
