The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has ordered free medical treatment for the victims of the deadly stampede that occurred on Saturday during a food distribution event in Abuja.
At least 10 people, including children, lost their lives, and 10 others sustained injuries in the tragic incident at a Catholic church in the Maitama area.
Wike, in a statement issued by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, Mr. Lere Olayinka, expressed his deep sympathy for the victims and their families.
He also reassured the public that the FCT Administration would ensure that all injured individuals receive adequate medical care.
While expressing his condolences for the lives lost, Wike directed that police permission be obtained from now on for any public distribution of palliatives, such as food and cash, to avoid future occurrences.
The Minister also praised the quick response of security agencies to the stampede, calling their intervention commendable.
He extended his condolences to the victims’ families and prayed for the repose of the souls of those who died.
“The promptness in which security agencies responded to the incident was commendable,” he added.
