United States Secretary of State Antony Blinken has expressed the nation’s readiness to work with the interim leader of South Korea, following the described the impeachment of South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol as a testament to the country’s democratic resilience.
Speaking on Saturday during a press briefing in Jordan, Blinken commended South Korea for adhering to its constitutional processes while pledging continued support for the country and its leadership.
“I think the most important thing is that the Republic of Korea demonstrated democratic resilience,” Blinken said. “We’ve seen it follow peacefully a process laid out in its constitution.”
With Prime Minister Han Duck-soo set to take over as interim leader following Yoon’s impeachment, Blinken reaffirmed the U.S.’s commitment to its alliance with South Korea.
“We are ready to work with President Han as he assumes office,” he said, adding, “We strongly support the Korean people. We strongly support the ironclad alliance between the United States and South Korea.”
Yoon Suk Yeol’s impeachment marks a significant political event in South Korea, with the nation once again demonstrating its commitment to democratic principles through a peaceful transition of power.
