As Nigerians anticipate the running mate of Peoples Democratic Party’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar; Delta State Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa, arrived at the party’s headquarters in Abuja on Thursday.
Okowa, who is rumoured to be the favourite pick, will attend the party’s vice presidential screening.
According to Channels Television, some party members welcomed him into the building with cheery ‘congratulations’.
This is just as the opposition party debunked reports claiming that Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, has been ruled out of the contest.
“If anything, our Party reiterates its confidence in Governor Nyesom Wikes’s outstanding ability and commitment to the ideals and values of the PDP.
“While the PDP notes the interest of the media and the public in our Party’s choice of Vice-Presidential candidate it is imperative to state that as an organic Party, all our processes will be followed through in strict adherence to our procedures before any official announcements.
“The PDP urges Nigerians to disregard the mischievous reports aimed at undermining our Party’s unity at this critical time,” a statement signed by the spokesperson, Debo Ologunagba, read partly.
Meanwhile, former Kaduna lawmaker, Senator Shehu Sani, on Thursday hailed Okowa’s role in Atiku’s emergence as the PDP’s presidential candidate but noted that either the Delta governor or his Rivers counterpart, Wike, who lost the ticket to Atiku can be the former Vice President’s running mate.
“Okowa played a key role in the victory of Atiku at the primaries and he is a cross between the South East and the South-South. Wike strongly emerged second, committed so much to sustaining the party and his ruggedness is an asset in the battle when it turns dirty. Any can be VP,” he said.
