United Kingdom Prime Minister Keir Starmer has extended his congratulations to United States President-elect Donald Trump ahead of his inauguration on Monday, expressing confidence that the longstanding “special relationship” between the two nations will continue to thrive.
Trump, set to begin his second term as the 47th president of the United States, will take the oath of office eight years after first assuming the role.
In a statement on Sunday evening, Starmer highlighted the deep bond between the UK and the U.S., describing it as a partnership rooted in mutual cooperation and shared values. “For centuries, the relationship between our two nations has been one of collaboration, cooperation, and enduring partnership. It is a uniquely close bond,” the Prime Minister said.
“Together, we have defended the world from tyranny and worked towards our mutual security and prosperity,” he added.
Starmer recalled his September meeting with Trump at Trump Tower in New York, where the two leaders discussed strengthening ties. At the time, Starmer referred to himself as a “great believer in personal relations on the international stage.”
On Sunday, the Prime Minister reaffirmed his commitment to deepening UK-U.S. relations, stating: “Since our first meeting in September, the President and I have spoken about the need to deepen and invest in the transatlantic relationship.
“We will continue to build upon the unshakeable foundations of our historic alliance as we tackle together the global challenges we face and take our partnership to the next level focused on shared opportunities ahead for growth.
“I look forward to our next meeting as we continue our shared mission to ensure the peace, prosperity, and security of our two great nations. The special relationship between the United Kingdom and the United States will continue to flourish for years to come.”
Meanwhile, Trump spent the night before his inauguration addressing a rally, where he celebrated his supporters and expressed optimism for America’s future. “We have built a new American majority that will lead our country to success for generations to come,” he declared.
UK politicians, including Nigel Farage, are already in Washington ahead of the inauguration. However, there are lingering questions about how Trump’s second term could impact global economies, especially if he enforces his proposed tariffs.
As both nations prepare to navigate this renewed chapter in their alliance, Starmer’s message emphasised hope and collaboration, underscoring the significance of the enduring ties between the UK and the U.S.
