The founder of Salvation Proclaimers Anointed Church, Pastor Tobi Adegboyega, has criticised recent remarks by Kemi Badenoch, leader of the United Kingdom’s opposition Conservative Party, regarding her experiences in Nigeria.
Badenoch, a prominent British politician of Nigerian descent, has frequently made critical statements about her country of origin. Most recently, in an interview with The Free Press, a US-based media outlet, she recounted a troubling experience with the Nigeria Police Force. According to Badenoch, officers stole her brother’s watch and shoes during their encounter.
Her comments have sparked widespread criticism in Nigeria, including a response from Vice-President Kashim Shettima, who condemned her negative portrayal of the country.
Addressing Badenoch’s statements in an interview with Channels Television, Pastor Tobi Adegboyega strongly disagreed with her narrative, arguing that while Nigeria has its challenges, it is not as dire as the UK politician suggests.
“I completely disagree with her statement. In 2023, 2024, 78,000 bags were snatched. 78,000 phones snatched in the UK in London. So I disagree with the statement,” Adegboyega said.
Highlighting systemic issues in the UK, particularly concerning the black community, the SPAC Nation leader added, “There is a very strong Nigerian black community in the UK. People who have been fighting for people like the leader of the opposition that you just mentioned to get to that position.
“We know what’s going on. Do you know that prisons have more black young people than schools in the UK?
“So there are more young black people in prisons in the UK, in most mental hospitals we have more young black people than in schools.
“So yes, our country has its own issues, but it’s definitely not true what the leader of the opposition is saying.”
