The Executive Director of Agriculture, Rural Development, and Natural Resources at the South East Development Commission, Dr. Clifford Ogbede, has emphasized that the establishment of the commission is a clear testament to President Bola Tinubu’s deep commitment to the development of the South East region.
Dr. Ogbede made this statement when members of the Ngor Okpala Journalists Forum visited him to offer congratulations at his Umuekwune country home in Obiangwu, Ngor Okpala Local Government Area of Imo State. He described the creation of the commission as a demonstration of President Tinubu’s concern, particularly in addressing long-standing challenges that had remained unresolved for over 50 years.
“The challenge of rebuilding the South East, especially in the aftermath of the civil war that ended in 1970, was a national issue that previous administrations neglected,” Ogbede said. “For President Tinubu to have acted decisively, despite the odds and despite all past refusals, speaks volumes about his genuine love and concern for the region.”
Ogbede praised President Tinubu for showing the political and moral will to address what he called the region’s perceived marginalization. He noted that the creation of the commission would not only foster development but also reduce the tensions and agitations that have arisen from the perceived neglect of the South East.
He also commended the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu, for his significant role in facilitating the SEDC’s establishment, both within and outside the National Assembly. Ogbede further acknowledged the cooperation of members of both chambers of the 10th National Assembly in ensuring the smooth and timely formation of the commission.
Dr. Ogbede expressed confidence in the leadership and management skills of the team appointed by President Tinubu to run the commission, stating that they were capable of achieving the SEDC’s mandates effectively.
Regarding his own appointment, Ogbede described it as a call to service, aligning with his long-standing commitment to serving God and humanity. He pledged to uphold integrity, humility, and a deep sense of responsibility in carrying out his duties.
The SEDC Executive Director urged the Ngor Okpala Journalists Forum to support the commission in its mission to rebuild the region.
“Your role as opinion leaders is crucial. Partnering with the SEDC will go a long way in helping us fulfill our mandates,” Ogbede said.
He assured them of the commission’s commitment to working closely with the forum and other stakeholders as they embark on the journey of rebuilding the South East.
