President Bola Tinubu on Friday commended the Nigeria Governors’ Forum for endorsing the four Tax Reform Bills currently being deliberated by the National Assembly.
In a statement released by his spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu expressed gratitude to the governors for their leadership and commitment to fostering national unity and progress beyond regional, ethnic, and political divides.
“Thursday’s productive consultation between the NGF and the Presidential Committee on Tax and Fiscal Policy is a commendable example of cooperation between the federal and state governments,” the President said.
Tinubu specifically praised Governor Abdulrahman AbdulRazaq, the Chairman of the NGF, for rallying his colleagues to support the tax bills aimed at revitalising the economy and improving Nigeria’s investment climate.
He also acknowledged the efforts of the Progressive Governors Forum, the Northern Governors Forum, and other bipartisan groups that facilitated the resolution of the controversies surrounding the proposed legislation.
President Tinubu described the Tax Reform Bills as pro-poor initiatives designed to advance national interests, enhance Nigeria’s economic competitiveness, and attract both domestic and foreign investments. He emphasised that updating the country’s outdated tax laws is critical to achieving these goals.
“The primary aim of the Tax Reform Bills, which is pro-poor, is to promote national interests, improve the competitiveness of Nigeria’s economy, and attract both local and foreign investments,” he stated.
Tinubu highlighted the constructive dialogue between the NGF and the Presidential Committee on Tax and Fiscal Policy as a demonstration of how collaboration can resolve differences. He encouraged other stakeholders with ideas and suggestions for refining the tax bills to engage with the ongoing legislative process.
“The dialogue between the NGF and the Presidential Committee on Tax and Fiscal Policy Reform highlighted the power of constructive conversation in resolving differences,” he said.
The President urged the National Assembly to expedite the passage of the Tax Reform Bills, stressing the urgency of implementing the reforms to yield swift benefits for the nation.
Tinubu concluded by reaffirming his administration’s dedication to fostering cooperation across all levels of government to ensure Nigeria’s economic recovery and sustainable development.
