The African Action Congress presidential candidate and vocal government critic, Omoyele Sowore, has been released by the Nigerian Immigration Service.
His international passport, confiscated upon arrival, has also been returned.
Sowore was taken into custody on Sunday morning at the airport, following his return from the United States.
The arrest was reportedly orchestrated by the Department of State Services due to his prominent role in the recent #EndBadGovernance protests.
The DSS directive to detain Sowore was allegedly issued by the newly appointed Director-General, Adeola Ajayi.
Sowore has faced repeated arrests for his activism and criticism of the government.
This latest incident has sparked concerns about freedom of speech and political persecution in Nigeria.
Sowore’s release and the return of his passport may be seen as a response to public pressure and scrutiny.
