The Senator representing Rivers South-East Senatorial District of Rivers State, Magnus Abe, said Kashim Shettima, topped the list of the All Progressives Congress sub-committee’s Vice President candidates nomination list.
Abe, who was part of the APC committee laden with the responsibility of nominating the running mate to the party standard-bearer, Bola Tinubu, said this while speaking on Arise TV on Friday.
This is coming on the heels of the comment by former Secretary to the Federation, Lawal Babachir, who claimed that other competent Christians were nominated by the committee, dislodging the argument that Shettima was chosen on the premise of competence.
Asked if Shettima was on the list nominated by the committee, Abe said, “Yes, because the name of Shettima was on the list and he was actually the first name on the list”.
The APC has been under fire for choosing a Muslim-Muslim ticket despite calls from Christian communities and other members of the party to shun such a move.
Reacting to calls to reject the Muslim-Muslim selection by several factions of the party, Abe said, “What I will say to you is that what we need in this country is a united, prosperous, effective and economically viable nation that gives most of our citizens an opportunity to be able to express themselves and pursue their lives vision and ambitions. That’s what we need.
“And to be able to achieve that we need a structure that is strong enough to deliver on that. In this country, what we vote for is the president, it’s the president that picks the vice-president, and it’s the president who’s going to make the decisions for this country. You must be able to trust the person that you vote for”.
