Vice President Kashim Shettima has inaugurated the National Road Safety Advisory Council to tackle Nigeria’s rising traffic crashes.
The council’s launch, held at the Presidential Villa, underscores the critical nature of road safety in the country. Shettima emphasized that road safety is a vital part of the nation’s lifeline, connecting its people.
”The establishment of NaRSAC aligns with recommendations from the World Bank Country Capacity Review, which identified areas for improvement in Nigeria’s road traffic administration and safety management,” Shettima said.
He urged FRSC Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, to embrace the recommendations as “a catalyst for the much-needed reforms in this sector.”
He also commended the seamless coordination between federal and state executives, as well as various government agencies.
”This spirit of unity exemplifies the essence of working together for the common good.
“I am confident that this intervention will enhance our transportation system and contribute to sustainable economic growth in Nigeria,” he said.
NaRSAC’s primary objectives include setting National Road Safety Strategy targets, ensuring effective coordination between federal, state, and local governments, and implementing the Nigeria Road Safety Strategy. The council aims to achieve zero deaths from road traffic crashes.
The FRSC’s commitment to addressing road traffic challenges was commended, with Shettima urging the Corps Marshal to implement World Bank recommendations for improving road traffic administration and safety management.
The council comprises six governors representing each geo-political zone, ministers from various sectors, and representatives from key organizations. These include the National Security Adviser, ALGON, NACCIMA, and the Nigerian Society of Engineers.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration has demonstrated its commitment to safeguarding citizens’ lives and property on the roads through NaRSAC’s establishment. This initiative aligns with Tinubu’s promise to strengthen administrative capacities across government bodies.
The launch marks a significant step towards enhancing Nigeria’s transportation system and contributing to sustainable economic growth. NaRSAC is expected to fast-track the implementation of the NRSS, utilizing the globally accepted “safe system approach” for managing road safety.
