The Peoples Democratic Party has won all the chairmanship and councillorship seats in all the 30 Local Government Areas in Osun States.
The Chairman of the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission, Hashim Abioye, announced this at a press conference on Saturday.
The election went ahead despite warnings from the Nigeria Police and the Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, who had advised the commission to suspend the poll over security concerns.
Abioye said the commission relied on a judgement from the Osun State High Court in Ilesa, which directed the electoral body to conduct elections to fill the vacant positions in the councils.
Voting started as early as 8 am on Saturday in all the local councils, including Ede North LGA, where Governor Ademola Adeleke cast his vote.
Speaking after voting, Adeleke described the election as peaceful.
“The process has been very peaceful. I made a broadcast to my good people of Osun State that this election should be peaceful. There should be no violence because Osun State is a very peaceful state,” he said.
However, Abioye accused the police of sealing the commission’s office in Osogbo and arresting some staff members. He explained that OSSIEC moved to an undisclosed location to carry out its duties.
On Friday, the police had warned against holding the election, saying they received credible intelligence about possible violence.
The warning came after the AGF argued that the election should be postponed, pointing to a recent Court of Appeal ruling in Akure on February 10, 2025, which overturned a previous judgement by the Federal High Court in Osogbo.
According to Fagbemi, the appeal court’s decision meant that the All Progressives Congress local government chairmen, previously sacked by the lower court, had been reinstated.
Tensions had been high in the state, with clashes between PDP and APC supporters over control of the local government councils. At least six people were confirmed dead since Monday due to the violence.
Earlier, Governor Adeleke had accused APC members, backed by security agencies, of attempting to take over council secretariats. He also urged President Bola Tinubu to caution his minister, Gboyega Oyetola, over the situation.
