According to Tribune, 24 out of the 32 members of the House had voted for the impeachment move, following which the Chief Judge of the state inaugurated an Investigative panel to probe the deputy governor.

The House of Assembly dominated by the Peoples Democratic Party had initiated impeachment and moved against Olaniyan following his defection from the PDP to the All Progressives Congress.

The assembly had served the deputy governor with a notice of impeachment over alleged gross misconduct, abuse of office, and financial recklessness, among others.

The Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Debo Ogundoyin, said the investigative panel found the deputy governor guilty of the charges against him

Olaniyan was elected in 2019 on a joint ticket with incumbent Governor, Engineer Seyi Makinde on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party but recently defected to the opposition party, the All Progressives Congress in the state.

Premium Politics on Thursday reported that the Oyo State High Court granted the lawmakers permission to proceed with the impeachment move initiated against Olaniyan.

Justice Ladiran Akintola on Thursday dismissed the suit filed by Olaniyan to stop the state assembly from removing him from office, adding that the impeachment move initiated by the lawmakers had not violated the constitution in any way.

The court said the lawmakers substantially complied with the provisions of Section 188 of the Constitution on the removal process.
