Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, and Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, have reaffirmed their dedication to promoting peaceful relations between their states, despite ongoing disputes over the ownership of the Soku Oil Wells and Bayelsa’s properties in Port Harcourt.
The commitment was made during a Christmas visit to Governor Fubara at the Government House in Port Harcourt, where Governor Diri led a delegation of Bayelsa State officials.
The visit reciprocated Fubara’s earlier trip to Yenagoa.
During the meeting, Governor Diri expressed his appreciation for Governor Fubara’s peaceful approach to resolving these long-standing issues. He acknowledged his counterpart’s efforts in facilitating a truce over the contentious Soku Oil Wells and the previous administration’s actions regarding Bayelsa State properties, which had led to a Supreme Court case under his administration.
Governor Fubara highlighted the deep historical ties between the two states, noting that they were once part of a united Rivers State. He emphasized the importance of continued cooperation between them.
Fubara also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to resolving the disputes in a manner that benefits both states.
Additionally, Governor Fubara stressed the need to strengthen the BRACE Commission, a regional body consisting of Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, and Edo States.
He called for the promotion of regional development and integration through the Commission.
