In a celebratory gesture, Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has named the 12.5km Kemta-Idi Aba-Somorin Road in Abeokuta after renowned Nobel Laureate, Prof Wole Soyinka.
This honour recognizes Soyinka’s remarkable achievements in academia and literature, which have brought distinction to the state, Nigeria, and the black race.
Speaking at a reception organized by the state government to mark Soyinka’s 90th birthday, Governor Abiodun praised Soyinka’s intellectual works, highlighting their impact on promoting humanity and showcasing Africa’s rich cultural heritage, according to Daily Post.
Abiodun noted that Soyinka’s life and works are testaments to his genius and dedication to advancing humanity.
The governor also expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for renaming the National Arts Theatre in Lagos after Soyinka, acknowledging the significance of this gesture. Abiodun emphasized that attaining the age of 90 is a testament to God’s grace on Soyinka.
Describing Soyinka’s writings as powerful tools for social change and enlightenment, Abiodun commended his commitment to creating a just and equitable world.
Former Secretary of the Commonwealth, Chief Emeka Anyaoku, also lauded Soyinka as a champion of democracy and a promoter of human dignity.
The event highlighted Soyinka’s resilience and dedication to his pursuits, including his imprisonment during the Nigerian Civil War. Despite these challenges, Soyinka remains steadfast in his quest for a better society.
This honour serves as a fitting tribute to Soyinka’s remarkable contributions to literature, academia, and humanity.
The governor said, “Prof Wole Soyinka is a towering figure in Literature and a Noble Laureate, whose works have echoed across the world; a shining star of our great nation. His life and works are great testaments of a genius. His intellectual prowess and his unwavering dedication to the advancement of humanity are without question.
“As a colossus of our era, he continues to exemplify the spirit of resilience through his unwavering commitment to truth and justice. Throughout his life, he has continued to challenge oppression, using himself as a mighty sword against injustice.”
“His writings are powerful weapons for social change and enlightenment, rich in symbolism and depth that have captivated audiences globally and transcended cultural boundaries.
“His career spans academia, Literature and activism, exemplifying a profound commitment to creating a just and equitable world,” he said.
