The Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, Peter Obi, has alleged that his life is under threat following his criticism of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
Obi made this claim in a post on his official X account on Monday.
The former Anambra State governor’s statement comes after comments from Felix Morka, the National Spokesperson of the All Progressives Congress , who suggested that Obi had “crossed the line” multiple times and would face consequences for his actions.
In his post, Obi expressed concern over what he described as Nigeria’s increasing shift towards an authoritarian and repressive regime, where freedom of expression is being stifled. He stated that, despite the threats, he would continue to speak out, particularly as the country veers toward undemocratic practices.
Obi questioned whether he had indeed crossed a line, referring to the threats against his life, family, and associates following his New Year message. He highlighted that Felix Morka had gone as far as accusing him of crossing the line and warning of consequences. Obi shared a link to his message again and invited anyone to point out where he had gone wrong, reaffirming his commitment to maintaining decorum in his speech.
He concluded his post by lamenting the erosion of free speech and calling for a better and freer society, hoping for the creation of a more democratic future for Nigeria’s children.
“Have I really crossed the line? I ask the question because my New Year message has now led to threats against my life, my family, and those around me. While I have received all sorts of messages, one Mr. Felix Morka has gone further to accuse me of ‘crossing the line’ and has warned that I will face the consequences.
“I find it necessary to share this message again and urge everyone who has not seen it to watch:

“If I have truly crossed the line, I invite anyone to point it out, as I remain committed to upholding decorum.
“We are increasingly transforming into an authoritarian and repressive regime, where freedom of expression is being systematically suppressed.
“May God help us create a better and freer society for the sake of our children,” he tweeted.
