The re-elected Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, is currently in a closed-door reconciliatory meeting with 39 lawmakers at the Assembly complex in Alausa, Ikeja.
The meeting, which began at about 2:10 pm, has in attendance the Deputy Speaker, Mojisola Meranda, and is aimed at pacifying aggrieved lawmakers, calming tensions, and setting a new course for the House.
With this development, Obasa may not resign as widely speculated in the public domain.
As of 3:45 pm, the crucial meeting was still ongoing.
It was also gathered that Obasa is likely to withdraw the lawsuit he filed against the House of Assembly and 33 lawmakers at the Ikeja High Court following his removal as Speaker.
On Monday, in a significant turn of events, members of the Lagos State House of Assembly re-elected Obasa as Speaker after then-incumbent Speaker Meranda resigned.
The re-election, conducted by the 40-member legislative body, followed a series of interventions by the leadership of the All Progressives Congress at both the national and state levels.
Obasa was initially removed from office by 33 out of 39 lawmakers on January 13, 2025, and was replaced by his former deputy, Meranda.
His removal sparked widespread controversy, causing tension within the House and the Governance Advisory Council, the highest decision-making body of the APC in the state, as well as among party faithful and supporters.
In response to the crisis, President Bola Tinubu deployed a high-powered national committee, led by Chief Bisi Akande and Aremo Segun Osoba, among others, to broker peace, ultimately leading to Obasa’s return as Speaker.
