The New Nigeria People’s Party in Kano has suspended the senator representing Kano South Senatorial District, Senator Kawu Sumaila, along with three other lawmakers, over alleged anti-party activities.
The suspension, announced on Monday, affects Kabiru Alhassan Rurum (Rano/Kibiya Federal Constituency), Ali Madakin Gini (Dala Federal Constituency), and Sani Abdullahi Rogo (Rogo/Karaye Federal Constituency).
Speaking at the NNPP secretariat in Kano, the party’s chairman, Hashimu Dungurawa, explained that the lawmakers had been elected on the party’s platform but had since been acting against its interests, norms, and values.
“We are seeing them—Senator Kawu Sumaila, Kabiru Alhassan Rurum, Ali Madakin Gini, and Sani Abdullahi Rogo—as not too functional members of our party. They are doing things contrary to our interests, norms, and values of our party, and we find it very necessary for us to have a stand, which is to suspend them because of their wrongdoings, bad attitude to the party, and demoralizing party stand,” Dungurawa stated.
He further alleged that despite receiving the party’s support during elections, the suspended members had turned against the NNPP.
“They were given complimentary tickets during the party elections but began to work against the party’s interests after being elected,” he said.
Dungurawa cited an example where Senator Sumaila commissioned some projects but did not invite party leaders, yet prominent figures from the opposition All Progressives Congress, including National Chairman Abdullahi Ganduje and Deputy Senate President Senator Barau Jibrin, were in attendance.
The suspension follows recent remarks by Ganduje at a political gathering in Kano over the weekend, where he hinted that plans were underway to welcome senior NNPP officials, senators, and other legislators into the APC.
