The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited has extended an invitation to former President Olusegun Obasanjo to tour its rehabilitated refineries, following his public doubts about the effectiveness of the $2 billion investment in the facilities.
Obasanjo, during a recent television interview, expressed skepticism about the progress made at the Port Harcourt and Warri refineries. He cited historical difficulties faced during his administration in efforts to improve Nigeria’s refining capacity.
“I was told not too long ago that since that time, more than two billion dollars have been squandered on the refinery, and they still will not work. If anyone tells you now that it is working, why are they still with Aliko? Aliko will not only make his refinery work but also make it deliver,” Obasanjo remarked, referencing the ongoing collaboration with businessman Aliko Dangote.
In response, NNPC’s Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Mr. Olufemi Soneye, acknowledged Obasanjo’s influence as a statesman and respected leader while addressing the concerns raised.
He stated, “We hold President Olusegun Obasanjo in the highest regard as a statesman who has significantly contributed to Nigeria’s development. His observations are deeply respected. However, we wish to emphasize that NNPC has undergone a remarkable transformation.”
Soneye explained that NNPC has transitioned from a loss-making entity to a profit-driven global energy leader. He highlighted that the refinery rehabilitation efforts represent comprehensive overhauls designed to meet world-class standards, unlike the limited Turnaround Maintenance operations carried out in the past.
He attributed the company’s success to the strategic leadership of Group CEO Mele Kyari and the transformative energy policies implemented under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.
Extending an olive branch, Soneye invited Obasanjo to witness the progress firsthand. “We warmly invite President Obasanjo to tour the rehabilitated refineries. His wisdom and experience are invaluable, and we deeply appreciate his guidance.
“This visit will offer an opportunity to witness the progress we have achieved under NNPC Limited’s leadership,” he said.
