The National Judicial Council has reaffirmed that Justice Maurice Ikpambese will continue in his role as the Chief Judge of Benue State, despite recent efforts by the Benue State House of Assembly to have him removed.
In a statement on Wednesday, NJC spokesperson Kemi Ogedengbe clarified that the council has not yet investigated or deliberated on the petition against Ikpambese, making any actions taken by the Benue State House of Assembly regarding his removal invalid.
The NJC also emphasized that the Constitution grants the council authority over the discipline and appointment of judicial officers, and that due process has not been followed in this case.
Although the NJC confirmed it had received a petition against Justice Ikpambese, it stated that the matter is still under review and will be addressed in accordance with the principles of fair hearing.
Part of the statement read: “The attention of the NJC has been drawn to reports that the Benue State House of Assembly has passed a resolution recommending the removal of the Chief Judge.
“Council wishes to reiterate that the Constitution clearly vests the discipline and appointment of judicial officers in the NJC, and due process has not been followed in this case.”
