A Nigerian, Ademola Adeyemi-Bero, has been appointed as the Governor for the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries.
He will also serve as the Chairman of the OPEC Board of Governors for 2025.
His appointment was confirmed during the 189th meeting of the OPEC Conference, as announced by Heineken Lokpobiri, Nigeria’s Minister of State for Petroleum Resources.
In a statement issued by his media aide, Nneamaka Okafor, Minister Lokpobiri praised Adeyemi-Bero’s appointment as a recognition of Nigeria’s significant role in the global oil industry.
Lokpobiri also emphasized that this new position offers Nigeria an important platform to advocate for energy policies that balance the needs of oil producers, consumers, and the global economy.
Before being appointed Chairman of the OPEC Board of Governors, Adeyemi-Bero had already been confirmed as Nigeria’s OPEC Governor for 2025. The minister also took the opportunity to express his deep gratitude to Ambassador Gabriel Aduda, the outgoing Nigerian OPEC Governor, for his outstanding service and for advancing Nigeria’s interests within OPEC, according to Channels TV.
Additionally, OPEC appointed Adeeb Al-Aama as Saudi Arabia’s Governor for OPEC and as the Alternate Chairman of the Board of Governors for 2025.
The OPEC Conference also discussed important matters such as the reports from the Secretary-General and the Economic Commission Board, while extending the tenure of Haitham Al Ghais as OPEC Secretary General for another three years, beginning August 1, 2025.
Member nations commended Al Ghais for his exemplary leadership and the Secretariat’s dedication to achieving OPEC’s objectives.
