Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State has described former governor Dr. Olusegun Mimiko as a transformational leader who left an enduring legacy in the state’s history through impactful projects and policies.
Aiyedatiwa delivered the commendation during a Special Divine Agenda Praise Evening held in Akure to celebrate Mimiko’s 70th birthday. The event was graced by former members of Mimiko’s executive council, political officeholders, traditional rulers, and other dignitaries.
Highlighting Mimiko’s leadership achievements, Aiyedatiwa said, “Dr. Mimiko is a leader who transformed Ondo State through impactful projects and policies. His dedication to human-centered governance earned him the love and respect of the people.”
He further commended Mimiko for completing his two-term tenure with distinction, adding, “This celebration is a testament to the legacy he has built and the affection people have for him. It is indeed a rare blessing to witness such honour while still alive.”
Aiyedatiwa acknowledged Mimiko’s contributions to infrastructure development, healthcare, education, and social programs, noting that these achievements continue to inspire the current administration and future leaders.
Pastor Wale Akinfesoye, a former Chaplain of the Government House Chapel, delivered a brief exhortation during the event. He encouraged Mimiko to deepen his service to God and urged political leaders to view their positions as opportunities to serve humanity, emphasizing their accountability.
In his response, Mimiko expressed profound gratitude to the people of Ondo State and the event organizers for their recognition and support. He pledged to remain committed to the state’s development and credited his family, particularly his wife Oluwakemi, for their steadfast support throughout his career.
Mrs. Mimiko also spoke, describing her husband as a visionary leader whose work has positively impacted many lives. She urged other politicians to emulate his example and strive to leave enduring legacies.
Dr. Mimiko served as Ondo State governor from 2009 to 2017, becoming the first in the state’s history to complete two terms. His tenure is widely celebrated for its focus on people-oriented governance, including landmark achievements in healthcare, education, and urban renewal.
Traditional rulers present at the event included the Deji of Akure, Oba Aladetoyinbo Ogunlade; the Osemawe of Ondo, Oba Victor Kiladejo; the Owa of Igbara-Oke, Oba Francis Agbede; and the Olu of Ilu-Abo, Oba Olu Falae, among others.
