Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, a day after her historic election as the first female Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, visited members of the Lagos Governor’s Advisory Council on Tuesday.
The purpose of her visit was to provide a briefing on the events at the Assembly and to seek the council’s blessings.
Speaking about the meeting at Lagos House, Marina, Meranda said, “I came to brief them about what happened at the House of Assembly yesterday and to seek their blessings, which we have gotten.” She was accompanied by other members of the Assembly.
Meranda, representing Apapa Constituency I, was elected Speaker on Monday following the impeachment of Mudashiru Obasa, whose decade-long tenure as Speaker ended after more than two-thirds of the 40-member House voted to remove him. Obasa was accused of misconduct and other offences, leading to his ousting.
Until her election as Speaker, Meranda served as Obasa’s deputy. Her rise to the leadership position marks a significant moment, as she becomes the first woman to lead the legislative body in Lagos State.
Obasa, representing Agege Constituency I, had been a member of the House since 2007 and became Speaker in June 2015. However, his reign came to an abrupt end on January 2025 due to mounting allegations and dissatisfaction among his colleagues.
Speaking about Obasa’s removal, Abiodun Tobun, a member representing Epe Constituency I, said the decision was made to uphold the Assembly’s integrity and restore its credibility.
Tobun explained, “The Constitution makes it clear that the House has the powers to regulate its proceedings. So, the members of the House felt that they’ve had enough of the Rt Hon Mudashiru Obasa and today, we have unanimously agreed that Rt Hon Mojisola Meranda Lasbat become the new Speaker of the House.
“So, it was a resolution concurred to by all members of the parliament and so be it. We cannot open our House and allow this parliament to dwindle. We owe our constituents a duty and we owe Lagos State a duty of ensuring that the sanctity of the House and the integrity of this House are restored.”
