Operatives from the Department of State Security and the police raided the Lagos State House of Assembly early Monday morning.
Reports indicate that DSS officials sealed off the offices of the Speaker, Mojisola Meranda, her deputy, and the Clerk of the Assembly.
Armed security personnel were seen taking control of the premises at Alausa, Ikeja around 10 am, with passersby being frisked as they attempted to approach the area.
Speaker Mojisola Meranda, along with her convoy, reportedly arrived at the scene at approximately 11:15 am.
This development follows a legal battle initiated by former Speaker of the Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, who filed a lawsuit against the Lagos lawmakers, challenging his removal from office. Obasa’s suit centers on the constitutionality of the events surrounding his impeachment.
The suit, which references several sections of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), argues that the proceedings of the Lagos State House of Assembly on January 13, 2025, were unconstitutional. The legal action questions the validity of the sitting and proceedings held during the Assembly’s recess, which was conducted without the Speaker’s authority to reconvene the House.
In the suit, Obasa also calls for the case to be expedited, citing public interest and the need to prevent delays in legislative activities in the state. The former Speaker urges the court to determine the legality of the continued leadership in the Assembly under the current leadership, which he claims violates established laws and rules.
The suit also seeks accelerated hearing and time concessions for all parties involved, emphasizing the urgency of the matter given the exceptional circumstances surrounding the case.
