The All Progressives Congress in Lagos State has denied issuing a directive requiring Local Government chairmen seeking re-election to resign ahead of the 2025 council elections in the state.
In a statement released on Monday, January 13, 2025, the party’s spokesperson, Seye Oladejo, described the alleged directive as fake news intended to mislead the public and party members.
“Our attention has been drawn to a false directive purportedly issued by the Lagos State Chairman of APC, Pastor Cornelius Ojelabi, to incumbent Council Chairmen, who intend to seek re-election to resign from their offices,” Oladejo said.
“We want to make it abundantly clear that there is no iota of truth in the publication, as it was twisted to suit the interest of the publisher.”
Oladejo clarified that the only directive issued by the party was targeted at APC Local Government party chairmen seeking elective offices. He explained that these chairmen were advised to resign their positions to avoid conflicts of interest during the election process.
“The local government party chairmen, who double as aspirants in the coming elections, for emphasis, will be required to resign their current positions when the guidelines are released,” he stated.
He urged party members and the general public to desist from spreading false information that could cause unnecessary tension.
“We wish to enjoin party members and the general public to refrain from peddling misleading information that can heat the polity,” Oladejo added.
