The Lagos State House of Assembly has suspended Alimosho Local Government Area Chairman, Jelili Sulaimon, indefinitely due to alleged misconduct.
The suspension, effective immediately, followed a unanimous decision by lawmakers on Monday.
According to the spokesperson for the Assembly Speaker, Eromosele Ebhomele, Sulaimon’s defiance and non-compliance with the legislative House led to his suspension.
“The management of the council, including the manager and treasurer, must recognize the authority of the vice chairman and support him to perform his duties effectively,” Ebhomele stated.
The Chairman of the House Committee on Local Government Administration and Chieftaincy Affairs, Sanni Okanlawon, moved the motion for Sulaimon’s suspension.
Okanlawon linked Sulaimon’s actions to the April 2024 chaos in Iyana-Ipaja, resulting in Michael Ajayi’s death. Despite invitations, Sulaimon showed continued misconduct.
He stated, “Despite being invited, Jelili continued to show misconduct towards the committee of the House,” Okanlawon said.
Okanlawon accused Sulaimon of mismanaging public funds and failing to follow directives. Majority Leader Noheem Adams supported the motion, citing unacceptable misconduct and disregard for procurement processes and budgeting.
He said, “The Alimosho council chairman does not follow procurement processes or the budget. His misconduct is unacceptable, and this suspension should serve as a warning to other local government chairmen.”
Nureni Akinsanya, Chairman of the House Committee on Public Accounts for Local Government, backed the suspension, referencing a State Auditor-General’s report highlighting financial irregularities under Sulaimon’s leadership.
Speaker Mudashiru Obasa directed the Clerk of the House, Olalekan Onafeko, to communicate the Assembly’s decision to relevant authorities. Vice Chairman Akinpelu Johnson will now oversee Alimosho Local Government.
