The Katsina House of Assembly has screened former Accountant-General of the state, Malik Anas, for confirmation as a commissioner.
The screening took place during a plenary session in Katsina on Wednesday, which was presided over by Speaker Nasir Yahaya-Daura.
In addition to Anas, the assembly also screened Abdullahi Gagare for the position of Chairman of the Fiscal Responsibility Commission.
After Anas provided a brief overview of his background, Lawal Yaro, the lawmaker representing the Musawa constituency, praised the timing of Anas’ nomination, emphasizing that Governor Dikko Radda had made a deserving appointment.
Yaro, who is from the same local government area as the nominee, urged the assembly members to allow Anas to “bow and go” in recognition of his generosity and kindness. He further requested that no questions be asked during the screening due to Anas’ competence and his long-standing contributions to the state.
The lawmaker highlighted that Anas had served Katsina in various capacities for over 20 years and had made significant contributions to the development of the state, especially in supporting women and youth. Yaro concluded by appealing to his colleagues to approve the nomination without further inquiry.
The lawmaker added, “I also wish to appeal to my honourable colleagues not to ask the nominee questions, because of his competency and personality.
“The nominee has served the state in different capacities for over 20 years. Therefore, he has contributed so much towards the development of this state.
“Considering his contributions, generosity, kindness and support to women and youths in the state, we should kindly allow him to bow and go.”
In response, Speaker Yahaya-Daura agreed with the lawmakers’ suggestions and directed that Anas be allowed to bow and proceed without facing questioning. Anas had previously served as the Accountant-General under the administration of former Governor Aminu Masari and was later appointed as a special adviser on banking and finance to Governor Radda before his current nomination.
