The lawmaker representing Rano, Kibiya, and Bunkure Federal Constituency, Kabiru Alhassan Rurum, has rejected his suspension from the New Nigeria People’s Party in Kano, describing it as baseless and a violation of a court order.
Rurum’s response came after Kano NNPP Chairman, Hashim Sulaiman Dungurawa, announced the suspension.
He clarified that he and his allies had never been part of the faction responsible for altering the party’s logo and affirmed their allegiance to a separate faction of the NNPP.
Rurum and Madakin Gini had previously distanced themselves from the Kwankwasiyya movement, aligning with the NNPP faction that uses the fruit and basket logo, rather than the book logo used by the other faction.
He emphasized that they have been part of the NNPP with the fruit and basket logo since the change and cited a court judgment dismissing the claims of the opposing faction.
He criticized the Kano NNPP leadership for ignoring court rulings, claiming their actions were in contempt of court. Rurum stated, “They are not the legitimate party leaders,” referring to their legal defeat and ongoing court battles. He also accused the leadership of misleading Nigerians regarding their position.
Rurum linked the suspension to the recent wedding of Senator Kawu Sumaila’s daughter, which he claimed was attended by many notable Nigerians. He alleged that party leaders, including national leader Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, were invited but deliberately chose not to attend.
“The real issue upsetting them, which shouldn’t even be political, is the wedding of Senator Kawu Sumaila’s daughter. Many distinguished Nigerians attended, and Kwankwaso was invited, but they refused to come,” Rurum said.
He dismissed the suspension as irrelevant, insisting that his faction remains independent and emphasizing that they are on separate political paths. “In reality, they have only suspended themselves because we are not part of their group,” Rurum concluded.
