National President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, has urged the Federal Government to invest in local intellects to revamp the country’s education system.
ASUU had on February 14, 2022, embarked on a four-week total and comprehensive strike to press home their unresolved demands on the federal government.
Some of the lecturers’ demands include funding for the revitalisation of public universities, payment of earned academic allowances, and adoption of the University Transparency Accountability Solution as a preferred payment option, instead of the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System and payment of promotion arrears.
Osodeke while speaking on Your View, TVC on Monday blamed the Inability of the Federal Government to ensure the development of its intellectuals and the academic community for its lingering economy woes.
According to him, the Federal Government is found of running to foreign nations to seek financial aid whenever they have any challenges, he also revealed that this has made them neglect homegrown solutions to solving its economy woes.
“Our government is found of running abroad to seek help, and these countries they go to use their intellectuals to grow their nation while we neglect ours.
“The best way to grow our economy is to adopt homegrown measures, we need to revamp our educational system by investing in our intellectuals.
“Check the best foreign universities today, they use Nigerian lecturers to come up with ground breaking research, we have the best doctors, engineers, economists and all who have left Nigeria because the Federal Government has failed to create an enabling environment for them to thrive, this is what we are fighting for” he added.
