Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, addressed the pressing need for unity and protection of the state’s diverse cultural heritage at the 2024 Nzem Berom, the cultural festival of the Berom tribe, coinciding with the 15th anniversary of the coronation of Gbong Gwom Jos, His Majesty, Da Jacob Buba.
The event, themed “The Future of Berom Land: Reconstruction, Rehabilitation, Reorientation,” took place at the Rwang Pam Township Stadium in Jos, drawing attention to the challenges facing the Berom people and the state as a whole.
Governor Mutfwang praised the Berom nation for its contributions to peace and solidarity and honored Da Buba for his leadership, emphasizing the pivotal role of traditional rulers like Gbong Gwom Jos in guiding communities and the state.
Representing the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, Senator Diket Plang lauded the Berom people for their industriousness and peaceful nature, highlighting their positive impact on Plateau State.
Former Governor Jonah Jang and former Chief of Army Staff, Gen. Theophilus Danjuma (Rtd), emphasized the importance of divine guidance and emphasized the imperative of maintaining peace and unity in Plateau State and Nigeria.
Gbong Gwom Jos, Da Buba, expressed concern over the high cost of food resulting from insecurity, reaffirming the Berom nation’s commitment to collaborating with the government to address the issue and safeguard agricultural activities crucial for sustenance.
He maintained, “A people without a culture, without traditions, are a lost people. God gave every people its territories and the Berom people desire to hand over the God-given heritage to their descendants.“The rains have set in and people have returned to their lands for farming, they must be protected to produce food that Nigerians will eat. The high cost of food is disturbing because the supply is short due to insecurity in communities.“We are ready to cooperate with governments as they try to find solutions to the different problems we face as a nation. Boundaries of chiefdoms, districts, and village areas should be well defined and protected…”
Launching the Berom Legacy Trust Fund aimed at empowering youth, the event saw generous donations from Governor Mutfwang, dignitaries, and well-wishers, reflecting a collective effort to address challenges and secure the future of Berom land.
