The Federal Government, in collaboration with key stakeholders, is set to roll out the ‘Proof of Address System Initiative’ across all 774 Local Government Areas in Nigeria to enhance national security and address socio-economic challenges.
Senator George Akume, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, announced this at a stakeholders’ meeting for the activation and implementation of the initiative in Abuja. Akume, represented by Dr Nnamdi Mbaeri, Permanent Secretary, General Services Office, explained that the initiative is part of efforts to address insecurity, social vices, economic instability, and inefficiencies in governance.
“The Proof of Address Initiative, which will be implemented across all 774 Local Governments, is designed to provide every resident with a verifiable and secured address,” Akume stated. “This crucial tool, which will become part of the administrative process across the public and private sectors, will bolster national security, enhance government planning, and contribute to a more orderly society.”
Akume highlighted that the initiative aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to tackling the country’s challenges and laying the groundwork for a safer, more prosperous Nigeria. He emphasized its significance:
“At this crucial time in our nation’s history, the proof of address system is indispensable in addressing these challenges. It serves as a foundation upon which various initiatives can be built to strengthen national security, streamline government operations, and foster economic growth. As we plan to embark on this project, we must recognise that it is not just a technical exercise but a transformative initiative with far-reaching implications for every sector.”
Akume urged Ministries, Departments, and Agencies to integrate proof of address certificates issued by local governments as a requirement for establishing reliable and verifiable addresses. He lamented the nation’s difficulty in combating criminal activities and planning for development due to the lack of an accurate address identification system.
“In light of these challenges, the introduction of the proof of address system is not just timely but necessary for the strengthening of our national identity management infrastructure,” he added.
Bello Lawal, National President of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria, lauded the initiative as a step toward improving security, fostering economic development, and promoting social inclusion at the grassroots. Represented by Mr Akala Samuel, Lawal described the project as transformative.
“The proof of address project is more than just an administrative tool; it is a fundamental shift in the way local governments interact with their citizens and communities. The current vision of the project is to help local governments find their place in the global social and economic development in the region. The goal is to create a solid base for social development and grow social collaboration,” Lawal said.
He noted that the initiative aligns with the federal government’s efforts to build a comprehensive and reliable national social register, addressing critical challenges such as poverty, unemployment, and inequality.
“By establishing a formal system of identification through the initiative, we are improving accountability and enhancing our ability to secure our neighbourhood,” Lawal emphasized.
The Proof of Address System Initiative is expected to transform local government operations, promote efficient governance, and contribute to the nation’s social and economic development. The collaboration between the federal government, ALGON, and other stakeholders marks a significant stride toward strengthening national identity management and improving the lives of Nigerians.
