The Independent National Electoral Commission has cleared the air on allegations of Bimodal Voter Accreditation System machine smuggling in Edo State.
Recall that the All Progressives Congress had petitioned INEC on October 10, accusing Peoples Democratic Party members of smuggling BVAS machines and voter registers into the commission’s office in Benin City.
However, INEC’s investigation found the allegations to be baseless and unsubstantiated, according to the PUNCH.
Resident Electoral Commissioner Dr. Anugbum Onuoha confirmed that the commission conducted a thorough probe.
Dr. Onuoha reassured the public that BVAS machines and voter registers were secure and never compromised or accessed unlawfully by any party or external entity. INEC remains committed to safeguarding the electoral process’s integrity.
The commission is willing to facilitate inspections of election materials, ensuring transparency in BVAS handling and adherence to the rule of law. Political parties have been urged to cooperate during the inspection process.
INEC’s prompt response aims to maintain public trust in the electoral system. The commission encourages political actors to focus on strengthening democratic principles, avoiding actions that could erode public confidence.
With the allegations dismissed, the electoral process in Edo State is set to proceed with integrity and transparency.
The REC said: “Recognising the seriousness of these claims, the commission conducted its investigation with the highest level of rigour, professionalism, and impartiality.
“As an institution tasked with ensuring free, fair, and credible elections, INEC will not tolerate any form of malpractice.
” The integrity of all electoral materials, including BVAS, remains fully intact and secure.”
