INEC deadline: Doyin Okupe ‘stands in’ as Peter Obi’s running mate

Labour Party to announce Obi's running mate as Okupe withdraws

Peter Obi and Doyin Okupe

Former presidential spokesperson, Doyin Okupe, on Friday said he is the running of Labour Party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi.

He made the announcement on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Friday.

Okupe said, “I stand in as the vice-presidential candidate of the party. Labour party has submitted my name as the VP of the party.”

If his candidacy holds, he will run alongside Peter Obi in the 2023 presidential election. Okupe had stepped down his presidential ambition in the Peoples Democratic Party for Obi before the duo decamped to Labour Party.

However, Okupe might be a placeholder to beat Friday’s deadline by the Independent National Electoral Commission for the submission of the name of a vice-presidential candidate.

Similarly, the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Bola Tinubu, has named Kabiru Masari as his running mate for the 2023 election whilst PDP’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, picked Delta State Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa.
