The Indonesia’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Usra Hendra Harahap, is currently under investigation following allegations of sexual harassment made by a former staff member at the Indonesian Embassy in Abuja.
According to the Jakarta Globe, the allegations, detailed in a petition by the victim’s legal team, claim the incident occurred on February 7 during official duties.
The victim, whose identity is being kept confidential, described the experience as traumatic and has since returned to Jakarta for counseling and support.
A psychological evaluation conducted by Indonesia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs revealed that the victim was diagnosed with severe Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, anxiety, and depression.
The victim also accused the embassy of retaliating against her by unjustly terminating her employment and subjecting her to excessive scrutiny during her time at the embassy.
The victim’s legal team is calling for an independent investigation, the reversal of her termination, and compensation for the damages she has suffered.
Roy Soemirat, a spokesperson for Indonesia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, confirmed that the Ministry is taking the allegations seriously. He stated that the Ministry is thoroughly examining the reports to ensure the investigation follows all legal procedures.
The Ministry has also offered psychological support to the victim and emphasized its commitment to addressing sexual violence within its diplomatic operations.
“We are thoroughly examining the reports, ensuring that the investigation follows all legal guidelines,” he said in a statement on Wednesday.
