The socio-political group Ijaw Youth Brigade has called on the Chief Judge of Edo State to maintain neutrality and impartiality in the governorship election tribunal proceedings, which commence today, Monday.
This appeal comes amidst rising tensions over the September 21 election results, with stakeholders urging the judiciary to uphold fairness and transparency.
In a statement, the leader of the Ijaw Youth Brigade, Mr. Bimode Borowari, urged the Chief Justice of Nigeria and the National Judicial Council to closely monitor the tribunal proceedings in Edo State to ensure the process is conducted with integrity.
Highlighting the judiciary’s vital role in safeguarding democratic principles, particularly in electoral disputes, Mr. Borowari stressed that public confidence in the electoral process depends on a transparent and unbiased tribunal.
He said, “Reports reaching us from various sources, and investigations reveal that the PDP and its candidate are relying on some persons in the judiciary to manipulate rulings in their favour. We want to use this medium to call on the Chief Judge not to fall to this ploy as Edo people are watching keenly with interest and will resist any form of manipulation or partiality.”
Borowari emphasized the importance of neutrality, noting that the tribunal’s decisions will have far-reaching implications for the state’s political future.
“As the tribunal sessions continue, all eyes will be on the Chief Judge and the judiciary’s handling of the proceedings. The group’s stance serves as a reminder of the delicate balance between the judiciary and the political arena, aiming to assure citizens of a fair election process,” he added.
He further called on stakeholders from all political parties to remain vigilant and committed to democratic values as the tribunal unfolds.
“The outcome of the tribunal is expected to influence future political dynamics in Edo State, making the necessity for a fair and neutral judiciary more pressing than ever,” Borowari added.
