The Borno State Urban Planning and Development Board has announced a ban on street hawking and other illegal activities within the Maiduguri metropolis.
The directive aims to improve urban order and ensure a safer environment for residents.
In a statement released on Friday, Limán Mustapha, the General Manager of the board, explained that the ban aligns with the Borno State Urban Planning and Development Law of 2002.
The ban specifically targets street hawking, tricycle operators, and generator mechanics operating in the areas around Maiduguri’s post office and Monday Market.
Additionally, the board prohibited various activities, including the use of pedestrian walkways, junctions, and roundabouts for any business purposes. The sale of engine oil on road reservations, dumping of sand or building materials, mixing of cement on roads, and the construction of boreholes along roadsides were also banned.
Mustapha urged individuals affected by the ban to vacate the occupied areas immediately, warning that failure to comply would result in arrests and prosecution in a court of law. He emphasized that the measures are crucial for maintaining a clean, safe, and organized urban environment in Maiduguri and across Borno State.
The board is urging all residents and business owners to adhere to the ban in order to avoid legal repercussions.
“The board has no alternative but to arrest and prosecute defaulters in a court of law,” adding that the measure would ensure a clean, safe and organised urban environment in Maiduguri and other parts of Borno.
