Several state chairmen of the All Progressives Congress have confirmed a meeting with the federal government after arriving in Abuja for the National Executive Committee meeting on Thursday, only to find a near-empty party secretariat.
Despite the meeting’s postponement, they met with journalists to discuss their plans.
The Cross River State APC chairman and forum secretary, Alfonsus Ogar, said, “If for nothing at all, even when we know the meeting (NEC) was cancelled, we want you to hear from us and know that these matters (Benue and Rivers crisis) have been put in proper perspective.”
Ogar debunked speculation that the APC is insensitive to Nigerians’ plight amid economic hardship, saying, “We are not unaware of that. And when we say that we are going to have a closed-door meeting with the party leadership and the Federal Government, rest assured that in no distant time, you will hear from us again.”
The Forum of APC State Chairmen, Cornelius Ojelabi, expressed condolences to the family of the late Oyo party chairman, Isaac Omodewu, and condoled the Borno governor and vice president over the flood incident.
The National Deputy Organising Secretary of the APC, Nze Chidi Duru, defended the state chairmen, saying some were already in Abuja before news of the NEC and Caucus postponement hit the media.
The National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, had earlier stated that a new date for the meetings would be announced later, without giving a reason for the postponement.
