Former Minister of Sports, Malam Bolaji Abdullahi, has announced his resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party in Kwara State.
Abdullahi, a known ally of former Senate President Dr. Bukola Saraki, communicated his decision in a letter addressed to the PDP chairman of his Ubandawaki Ward in Ilorin West Local Government Area.
The letter, dated December 16, 2024, outlined Abdullahi’s decision following what he described as days of reflection and introspection. He expressed gratitude to the PDP leadership for the opportunities he had to serve the state and nation through the party’s platform, acknowledging the shared moments he experienced during his membership.
Confirming the development, Alhaji Mas’ud Adebimpe, a close associate of Abdullahi and former chief press secretary to Dr. Saraki, noted that the resignation marked a significant shift in the former minister’s political journey.
In response to Abdullahi’s exit, the PDP’s Kwara State Publicity Secretary, Olushola Adewara, stated that the resignation was a personal decision. Adewara emphasized that Abdullahi did not cite any grievances against the party or its leadership and added that the PDP harbored no ill feelings toward him. The party extended its best wishes to the former minister as he embarks on new ventures.
The former minister’s letter reads: “I write to formally resign my membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). I have had ample time to reflect, and I have come to the difficult conclusion that this is the only tenable option for me at this time.
“Mr. chairman, please permit me to express, through you, my gratitude to the leadership of the party for the opportunities that I have had to serve the state and the country on its platform, and for the great moments we have shared.”
Adewara added: “We wish the former minister well in his adventures . The decision is personal to him as it is reflected on his letter of resignation, and he didn’t state whether the party or our leader offended him in person , so there’s no ill feeling.
“He chose to come to politics without getting permission from anybody, and if he’s leaving based on his personal conviction without throwing tantrums at anyone , the party can only wish him good luck on his adventure.”
