A former Minister of Defence and Minister of Interior, Major General Godwin Osagie Abbe (retired), has died.
He passed away on Saturday night in Abuja after battling a protracted illness, as confirmed by family sources.
Born on January 10, 1949, General Abbe was just weeks away from his 76th birthday. His illustrious career spanned decades in the Nigerian military and public service, making him one of Nigeria’s most distinguished military officers.
General Abbe’s early education began at United Baptist School, Benin City (1953–1960), followed by Iguodala Secondary Modern School, Benin City, and Kiriji Memorial College, Igbajo, Ifelodun, Oyo State. He later attended Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, before enlisting in the Nigerian Army in July 1967.
His military training included courses at the Nigerian Defence Academy, Kaduna, the Airborne/Infantry Officer Advanced Course at the U.S. Army Infantry School, Fort Benning, Georgia (1972–1973), and the Ghana Armed Forces Staff College, Teshie (1978–1980).
Abbe’s career in the Nigerian Army began when he was promoted to Lance Corporal in 1967. He quickly rose through the ranks, becoming a Lieutenant in 1969, a Captain in 1971, and a Major in 1975. His roles included serving as a Battalion Commander (1969–1972) and as an Instructor at the Nigerian Defence Academy (1974–1976).
By 1980, he was the first Nigerian Directing Staff on secondment to the Ghana Armed Forces Staff College. Promoted to Lieutenant Colonel in 1983, he continued to excel, eventually becoming a Colonel in 1986. Between 1988 and 1990, he served as the Military Governor of Akwa Ibom State.
General Abbe reached the pinnacle of his military career as General Officer Commanding 2 Division, Commander of Training and Doctrine Command, and Commander of the National War College (now National Defence College). He retired in 1999 with the rank of Major General.
Following his military career, Abbe transitioned to public service. He was appointed Minister of Interior on July 26, 2007, and later served as Minister of Defence from July 14, 2009, to March 17, 2010. He also held the position of Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party in Edo State.
General Abbe was one of the most decorated military officers of Edo extraction. His honours included the Forces Service Star Medal, the Distinguished Service Star, and the Pass Staff College. He was also a Member of the National Institute.
Abbe had a love for squash, hunting, and masonry, activities that brought him joy throughout his life.
Major General Godwin Osagie Abbe, CFR, will be remembered for his remarkable contributions to Nigeria’s military, governance, and public service. His passing marks the end of an era for a man who dedicated his life to the service of his nation.
