The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has reportedly summoned the suspended chairmen of the 18 Local Government Areas in Edo State for questioning.
The invitation was detailed in a letter signed by the EFCC’s Director of Investigation, Abdulkarim Chukkol, and addressed to the Secretary to the State Government. The letter, dated December 17, outlined a schedule for the chairmen’s appearances at the EFCC office.
According to the letter, the chairmen of Akoko-Edo, Egor, Esan Central, Esan North East, Esan South East, and Esan West are to report to the commission on Thursday, December 19. Also expected on the same day are the chairmen of Etsako Central, Etsako East, and Etsako West local governments.
The remaining chairmen from Igueben, Ikpoba Okha, Orhionmwon, Ovia North East, Ovia South West, Owan East, Owan West, and Uhunmwode local governments are scheduled to appear on Friday, December 20.
The EFCC has requested the chairmen bring certified true copies of several documents, including:
– Comprehensive records of staff strength and payroll.
– Details of accounts used for receiving staff salaries.
– Details of accounts set aside for salary exigencies.
– Statements of the above accounts from January 1 to date.
Chukkol stated that the request aligns with Section 38(1)(2) of the EFCC (Establishment) Act, 2004.
This development follows the suspension of the chairmen and their vice chairmen by the Edo State House of Assembly on December 17. The suspension, according to reports, was based on allegations of insubordination and misconduct.
It was alleged that the chairmen failed to submit their financial statements as directed by Governor Monday Okpebholo.
