The Independent National Electoral Commission Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu, has announced that the commission has complied with court orders, resulting in changes to the candidates list for the upcoming Edo State governorship election.
Speaking at a stakeholders meeting on Wednesday, Yakubu confirmed that the Labour Party’s running mate has been replaced and the National Rescue Movement has been added to the list, following court orders.
The meeting, attended by political parties, candidates, election observers, and media organizations, aimed to discuss preparations for the September 21 election, according to Daily Post.
Yakubu noted that INEC has implemented 11 out of 13 scheduled activities, with only two outstanding tasks remaining.
He reminded parties that campaigning ends 24 hours before the election, on September 19.
The updated list of parties and candidates is available in an information booklet distributed at the meeting, with 18 political parties now participating in the election.
He said, “By court order, the Commission has replaced the running mate to the candidate of the Labour Party. Similarly, the National Rescue Movement (NRM) which could not file its nomination on schedule has obtained a court order to compel the Commission to include the party on the ballot.
“We have complied with the court order.”
He added, “Consequently, 18 political parties are now participating in the 2024 Edo State Governorship election.
“The updated list of parties and candidates is contained in the information booklet circulated at this meeting.”
