Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has condemned the arbitrary detention of local Peoples Democratic Party leaders in Edo State, calling for security agencies to be held accountable.
In a statement shared on his official X (formerly Twitter) account, Atiku said, “The very essence of tranquility is imperiled when the state’s federal assets are wielded to harass and intimidate political adversaries.”
He emphasized that the detainment of opposition members threatened the PDP’s ability to function as a competitive political force, undermining the principles of peace and fair competition, especially as the Edo State governorship election approaches.
Atiku called on the Inspector General of Police and other top security officials to either release the detained PDP members or present them before a court if there are legitimate reasons for their arrest.
His statement comes as tensions between political parties rise ahead of the off-season election, with accusations of bias and unfair treatment by the authorities becoming a central issue.
