The Deputy Chief Whip of the Senate and Senator representing Ebonyi North Senatorial District, Peter Onyekachi Nwebonyi, has voiced his support for the proposed establishment of State Police.
Nwebonyi, who is also a member of the Senate Constitution Review Committee, expressed his views during an interview with AIT on their program titled: “Inside Parliament” shortly after the plenary session on Tuesday, May 7, 2024, at the National Assembly Complex, Abuja.
As an astute lawmaker and senior lawyer, he emphasized the necessity of state police to address the overwhelming security challenges across the country that seem to have surpassed the capacity of the federal police.
In addition to his stance on the proposed State Police, the federal legislator reiterated his opposition to the proposed increase in electricity tariffs, citing the insensitivity of such a move during a period of economic hardship for Nigerians.
Nwebonyi, who also serves as the Nigerian representative at the Economic Community of West African States parliament, urged Nigerians to maintain faith in the President Tinubu-led administration, assuring them that the benefits of the administration’s bold economic policies would soon be felt by all citizens.
He emphasized the importance of the ongoing constitutional amendment, stating that it would address governance loopholes, particularly highlighting that the current constitution was a product of military rule.
Nwebonyi also expressed optimism about the forthcoming benefits of the 2024 budget, stating, “Of course, Nigerians should expect the best. We have passed our budget. Very soon, the proceeds of the budget will start flowing out all towards making Nigerians happy in line with the Renewed Hope agenda of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.”
