The Igbo community residing abroad, particularly in Europe and America, is set to convene an emergency general meeting of the World Igbo Congress on Saturday, January 25, 2025.
According to Vanguard, the Vice Chairman of WIC, Hon Basil Onwukwe, revealed that the Chairman of the Board of Directors, Dr Festus Okere, directed him to summon the meeting. The virtual meeting is scheduled for noon United States Eastern Time and 7:00 p.m. Alaigbo Time.
The planning committee noted that the timing of the meeting is critical, given pressing issues affecting the Igbo community. Key topics on the agenda include the prolonged detention of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, and the escalating insecurity in the South-East region of Nigeria and other parts of Igboland.
“This meeting couldn’t have come at a better time when homeland leadership is unimaginably inept. When politicians cannot support the right to life of our youths in the public,” Onwukwe stated.
He further highlighted the deteriorating security situation in Igboland, adding, “The militarization of our homeland and the deliberate plot to deprive us security is a clear present danger. The abductions and locking up or kill-on-sight raids in homeland is the height of betrayal and an irreconcilable threat to national unity.”
Onwukwe emphasised the significance of the meeting, saying, “This meeting will enable us to fashion a diaspora solution for Ndigbo and form a strong alliance to solve the pending issues, including Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, MNK’s unlawful incarceration.”
The World Igbo Congress hopes the meeting will chart a path toward addressing these critical challenges and fostering unity among Ndigbo in the diaspora and at home.
