The Delta State Commissioner for Works, Rural Roads, and Public Information, Charles Aniagwu, has refuted claims that Governor Sheriff Oborevwori is planning to defect from the Peoples Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress.
Aniagwu addressed the rumours during an interview on Arise TV on Friday, following speculations fueled by the perceived cordial relationship between Governor Oborevwori and President Bola Tinubu.
He described the claims as baseless, attributing them to individuals hoping to bolster their ranks by spreading false narratives about the governor’s loyalty.
“The PDP is heavily pronounced and profound in Delta,” Aniagwu said. “That explains to you that those who are rumouring that Oborevwori wants to move to the APC are only wishing that he comes to swell up their rank.
“Oborevwori is not only a proud member of the PDP, and remains a proud leader of the PDP both in Delta and in Nigeria, he is also a performing governor, who has also been able to show that he can be regarded as the poster governor for the PDP. So, those who are wishing that he’s jumping ship, we want to tell them that Oborevwori is not in the business of jumping ship.”
The rumours gained traction after President Tinubu attended the wedding of Governor Oborevwori’s son, where he described the Delta governor as a “bridge builder.”
During the opening ceremony of the 5th Edition of the Delta State Communication Workshop in December 2024, Governor Oborevwori pledged his support for Tinubu’s administration while reaffirming his commitment to advancing Delta State’s development under the PDP platform.
Aniagwu concluded by reiterating that Governor Oborevwori’s allegiance to the PDP remains steadfast, dismissing any suggestion of a defection as wishful thinking.
