Concerned Civil Society Organisations of Nigeria has called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to make public its findings on the investigation of suspended Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr. Betta Edu.
Recall that Edu was suspended by President Bola Tinubu on January 8, 2024, over allegations of mismanaging N585.189 million grants meant for vulnerable groups in several states. The controversy surrounding her suspension intensified when it was discovered that she had approved flight fares for ministry staff traveling to Kogi State, which lacks an operational airport, according to Nigerian Tribune.
CCSON expressed dismay over the presidency’s silence on Edu’s case, contrasting it with the swift replacement of National Coordinator and CEO of the National Social Investment Programme Agency, Halima Shehu. The group criticized the disparity in treatment, stating it undermines principles of accountability and fairness in governance.
The EFCC has recovered N30 billion from Edu’s ministry, traced to 50 different accounts, but its full findings remain undisclosed. CCSON urged President Tinubu to replace Edu, ensure equitable treatment, and prioritize transparency in government actions.
The group emphasized the importance of accountability in governance and the public’s right to know the truth behind the allegations. The delay in disclosing the EFCC’s findings is eroding trust in President Tinubu’s anti-corruption stance.
CCSON stressed that transparency is crucial for effective governance and maintaining public trust. The group’s call for action seeks to ensure those in power are held accountable.
The development highlights growing concerns about accountability and transparency within government institutions. The public awaits the EFCC’s findings and President Tinubu’s next steps in addressing the allegations.
“While we commend the prompt action taken against Halima Shehu, we are dismayed by the presidency’s silence regarding Dr Betta Edu.
“This selective accountability sends a troubling message about the commitment of this administration to uphold justice for all Nigerians,” the statement reads in part.
