Court of Appeal

The Appeal Court has said the tribunals hearing the appeals of Saturday’s bye-elections in Surulere Federal Constituency I, and that of the Saki West Federal Constituency of Oyo State will be held in Lagos.

The tribunal secretary, Ibrahim Usman, who made this known in Ibadan, Oyo State capital on Monday, said the panel would sit at Roseline Omotosho Court House, Ikeja, Lagos.

Usman noted that the President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Monica Dongban-Mensem, constituted the tribunal to hear petitions on Saturday’s by-elections in both state constituencies.

“For any enquiry, members of the public are advised to contact the tribunal’s registry at the aforementioned venue,’’ he stated.

Fuad Laguda, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, defeated his two major contenders to win the by-election in Surulere I Federal Constituency on Saturday.

Laguda polled 11,203 votes, while his closest rivals, Adeola Damilola of the Labour Party, scored 240 votes, and Afemighie Jerry of the Peoples Democratic Party polled 278 votes.

Consequently, the former chairman of Surulere LGA will replace the former lawmaker from the Constituency, Femi Gbajabiamila, who was the former speaker of the House of Representatives before he was appointed the Chief of Staff to President Bola Tinubu.

Similarly, the candidate of the APC for the Saki West Federal Constituency of Oyo State, Ibrahim Shittu, won Saturday’s by-election in the area.

Shittu was earlier declared as the winner of the March 18 state election in the constituency was sacked by the Court of Appeal which ordered a rerun in two units of the constituency.

However, Shittu at the end of Saturday’s rerun election, polled 13,850 votes, while his closest contender from the Peoples Democratic Party, Julius Okedoyin, polled 13,670 votes in the election.
