Ahead of the 2027 general elections, the 2023 presidential candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has vowed to reduce the influence of the ruling All Progressives Congress in Kano State.
Kwankwaso declared that his party would work relentlessly to ensure the APC garners fewer than 15,000 votes in the state, mirroring the performance of the People’s Democratic Party in the 2023 elections.
Speaking at his Miller Road Mansion in Kano while receiving NNPP delegates from the Kano North senatorial district, Kwankwaso expressed satisfaction with the party’s achievements in the 2023 elections, where the PDP struggled to secure only 15,000 votes in Kano. He attributed the party’s success to its grassroots mobilisation despite its status as a relatively new political platform.
“Now, it’s time to diminish APC’s influence. We will work tirelessly to ensure their votes are reduced to less than 15,000 in Kano by 2027,” Kwankwaso said.
The former governor emphasised the need for commitment and grassroots engagement to establish the NNPP as a formidable political force in Kano and across the nation. He encouraged party members to remain focused and work towards achieving the party’s goals in future elections.
The leader of the NNPP delegation, Abdul Bichi, stated that their visit was aimed at reaffirming their loyalty to Kwankwaso and distancing themselves from the former Secretary to the State Government, Dr Abdullahi Baffa Bichi.
“It is true we are supporters of the former SSG, and we are from the same constituency as Dr Abdullahi Baffa Bichi. But we have decided to distance ourselves from him since he is no longer with the government,” Abdul explained.
“We have come here to see our national leader and founder of Kwankwasiyya in solidarity and to renew our total loyalty to him. We have come to say we are not leaving our party. We are not going with the SSG,” he added.
The former SSG, Dr Abdullahi Baffa Bichi, was alleged to have spearheaded a faction urging Governor Abba Yusuf to take full control of the government, accusing Kwankwaso of interference. This alleged insubordination led to Bichi’s suspension by the NNPP in the state and his eventual removal from office. The government, however, cited health reasons for his dismissal.
Kwankwaso’s renewed call for unity and grassroots mobilisation highlights the NNPP’s determination to strengthen its presence and challenge the dominance of the APC in the upcoming elections.
