The Transitional Council Chairman of Orumba North Local Government Area in Anambra State, Casmier Nwafor, has called on the acting Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, to tackle erring jurists and restore confidence in the legal system.
In an interview, Nwafor expressed his delight at the appointment of a second female CJN, highlighting the growing role of women in the judiciary, according to Peoples Gazette.
He emphasized the need for the new CJN to address controversies and contradictory judgments that have ridiculed the legal profession.
Nwafor urged Justice Kekere-Ekun to ensure a truly independent judiciary that secures the hopes of the common man.
He congratulated her on her appointment and wished her success in her new role.
Justice Kekere-Ekun, who will serve in an acting capacity pending Senate confirmation, replaces retired Justice Olukayode Ariwoola.
She is the second female CJN after Justice Aloma Mukhtar, who served from 2012 to 2014.
He said, “As a lawyer, I am happy that we have another female CJN. She is coming at a time when jurists get muddled up in so much controversy with no one beaming the search lights on them or punishing such misdemeanours. We have had lots of contradictory judgments which really ridiculed the legal profession. I expect the new CJN to sanitise the judiciary and restore people’s confidence in the legal system.
“We want to see a truly independent judiciary where hopes of the common man will be secured.’’
